You may have noticed that Drs. Brilliant and Rothenberg specialize in "Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics." While most people have heard of orthodontics, many are confused by the “dentofacial orthopedics" part of the title. We can explain!
Dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development which occurs largely during childhood. The growth of both the jaws and the dentition can influence both esthetics and function for the growing child. Orthodontists can greatly influence this development with the aid of braces and appliances. Appliances are used for multiple purposes depending on your individual needs. Some examples are; palatal expanders, bite plates, or even functional appliances that can stimulate or inhibit the growth of the developing jaws. Sometimes orthopedic treatment may precede conventional braces, but often the two are accomplished at the same time.
Both Drs. Brilliant and Rothenberg are highly educated and skilled in the development of the facial complex. They are able to diagnose any misalignments in the teeth and jaws as well as the facial structure. A treatment plan that is specific to your individual needs will be presented during your initial exam.
